Prashna Upanishad

The Prashna Upanishad belongs to the Atharvaveda and is structured as six questions posed by spiritual seekers to the sage Pippalada covering the origin of life the nature of prana the relationship between individual self and supreme Self the states of consciousness in sleep and dreams the significance of meditation on Om and the nature of the person of sixteen parts

Sanskrit Text

Om bhadram karnebhih shrinuyama devah bhadram pashyema akshabhir yajtrah sthirair angais tushtuvamsas tanuubhih vyashema devahitam yad ayuh

Translation

Om May we hear with our ears what is auspicious O gods May we see with our eyes what is auspicious May we with firm limbs and sound bodies praise and enjoy the life allotted to us by the gods

Commentary

This opening invocation is a prayer for the welfare and spiritual progress of the students setting a tone of reverence and sincerity that should accompany spiritual inquiry The Prashna Upanishad teaches that prana the life force is not merely breath but a cosmic principle that pervades all existence connecting the individual with the universal Through meditation on prana and Om one can progressively realize the unity of individual consciousness with supreme consciousness
