Katha Upanishad
The Katha Upanishad is one of the major Upanishads that explores the profound questions of life death and the eternal Self. It tells the story of young Nachiketa who seeks ultimate knowledge from Yama the God of Death. This sacred text is divided into two chapters each containing three sections. The narrative begins when young Nachiketa is sent to the abode of Yama by his father. When Yama is absent for three nights Nachiketa waits without food or water. To compensate for this breach of hospitality Yama offers three boons. Nachiketa asks for the secret of what happens after death which leads to profound teachings about the immortal Self and its identity with Brahman

Commentary
This opening invocation is a prayer for the welfare of both teacher and student emphasizing the sacred relationship in spiritual learning The story begins with Vajasravasa performing a sacrifice but his gifts are old and worthless cows Young Nachiketa disturbed by his fathers insincerity questions to whom he himself will be given as a gift When his father angrily says I give you to Death Nachiketa accepts this as his fathers word and journeys to the abode of Yama This teaches us about the importance of truthfulness and the courage to seek ultimate knowledge even in the face of death itself
